On November 7, 2017, Indonesian Food and Drug Administration officials are looking at illegal whitening cosmetics seized for possible harm.
Reporter Hwang Chul-hwan reported that skin whitening cosmetics containing mercury above the standard are sold on major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, eBay, and Lazada.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 27th, `` Zero Mercury Working Group '' (ZMWG), an international environmental organization association, was used in 95 of 158 products of 30 kinds of whitening cosmetics purchased online and offline in 12 countries. Mercury above the threshold (1 ppm) was detected recently.
The mercury content for each product ranged from as low as 40 ppm to as high as 130,000 ppm.
More than two-thirds (65) of those mercury levels exceeded those sold online.
In particular, Amazon's 20 products purchased in the US (8), India (10) and the UK (2) out of the 25 products tested exceeded the standard.
In addition, eBay has detected excessive mercury in seven and ten products from the United States and Belgium, respectively.
Zero Mercury Working Group has the highest number of whitening cosmetics with mercury content above the standard (59% (62%)) in Pakistan, 18 Thailand (19%), 12 China (13%) and 2 Malaysia (2%). ). One in the Philippines (1%) and one in the United States (1%).
The survey was conducted by ZMWG member organizations in 12 countries, including the United States, Belgium, Djibouti, India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Nigeria, Philippines, South Africa, Uganda, the United Kingdom and Ivory Coast.
Zero Mercury Working Group pointed out, "Products that exceed mercury levels are banned worldwide, but are still on the Internet."
Amazon, meanwhile, has removed mercury-detecting skin whitening cosmetics from its website and has begun eBay-related procedures, according to the Wall Street Journal.
